For our guided 5-day canoe tour in western Canada, we paddle the younger Athabasca River where it leaves the Rocky Mountains, just east of Jasper National Park, Alberta. The 160 km (100 mi) stretch between the towns of Hinton and Whitecourt is rated for Novice Paddlers with basic skills. There are some rapids Class 2 and one rapid Class 3. The river is wide enough so larger waves can be avoided.

They include one day on a campground for preparations and canoe training on a quiet lake in the eastern foothills of the Rockies. For 3 nights we pitch our tents on one of the many islands in the Athabasca River, or wherever we find a good spot along the shores. It is an unusual and stimulating feeling when one realizes that you and your few friends in the small group are the only humans for miles around.
